Six terms as Prime Minister of Mauritius, two terms as President. The single most consequential architect of what the island became after independence — a constitutional democracy, a financial-services economy, a country that climbed from sugarcane-dependence to one of Africa's highest per-capita incomes inside a generation. Grandson of an indentured labourer who had crossed the kala pani from Bihar in the late nineteenth century, Jugnauth read for the Bar at Lincoln's Inn, returned home in 1954, and spent the next sixty-seven years building. The Mauritian Indo-Mauritian community he led carries the Girmitiya story forward; the country he helped construct is the most successful long-running experiment in what an Indo-diaspora-majority polity can look like when it works. Died on 3 June 2021. The Mauritian state holds an annual day of remembrance.
