Kamala Harris

Politician, lawyer · United States

Citation

The first woman, the first Black American, and the first person of South Asian descent to serve as Vice President of the United States. Daughter of Shyamala Gopalan, a Tamil-Indian breast-cancer researcher, and Donald Harris, a Jamaican economist — Kamala Harris grew up between Oakland and Berkeley with the political consciousness of two parents who met as graduate students in the Bay Area civil-rights movement. Howard University, UC Hastings law, then San Francisco's District Attorney, California's Attorney General, the United States Senate, and on 20 January 2021 the Vice Presidency itself. Her single Senate term, her four years as Vice President, and her 2024 presidential candidacy each compressed enough history into themselves to register as the moment the Indian-American political ascent stopped being prospective and became actual. The diaspora's politics — and its self-image — moved forward inside one career.
