Salaam Bombay! (1988), Camera d'Or at Cannes and Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Mississippi Masala (1991), Monsoon Wedding (2001, Golden Lion at Venice), The Namesake (2006), Queen of Katwe (2016), A Suitable Boy (2020). The filmmaker who, more than any other, took the Indian diaspora's specifically diasporic stories — the in-between-ness, the Punjabi-Ugandan-American crossings, the cosmopolitan Delhi weddings — and made them legible to an international audience without sanding off the specific. Born in Bhubaneswar in 1957, Delhi University and then Harvard. Has lived between New York, Delhi and Kampala; runs Maisha Film Lab in Uganda for young East African filmmakers. The case for her presence here is not contestable.
