Britain's first British-Indian Prime Minister, and the first Hindu to hold the office. Born in Southampton in 1980 to East-African-Indian parents — his father a GP, his mother a pharmacist — Sunak read PPE at Oxford, took an MBA at Stanford as a Fulbright Scholar, then moved through Goldman Sachs and the hedge-fund industry before entering Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015. Chancellor of the Exchequer through the pandemic, Prime Minister from October 2022 to July 2024. The diasporic significance of his elevation outran its political contents: a brown man, son of Punjabi Hindus, who lit a Diwali diya at 10 Downing Street and was sworn in on the Bhagavad Gita. The premiership itself was short and electorally disappointing. The fact that Britain made it happen at all was the historical event.
