Building Bridges Across Nations

Sundar Pichai

Sundar Pichai

CEO, Alphabet/Google · United States

Citation

Chief executive of Alphabet Inc and Google — and the easiest of the diaspora's contemporary household names to underestimate. Born in Madurai in 1972, the son of an electrical engineer and a stenographer, raised in a two-room flat without a telephone until he was twelve. IIT Kharagpur, then Stanford, then Wharton, then McKinsey, then in 2004 an interview at Google for a product-management role on a small initiative called the Toolbar. He has run the company, in one form or another, since 2015. Under his tenure Google has navigated the smartphone transition, the Android empire, the regulatory turn against Big Tech, and the AI restructuring. He is publicly the unspectacular one — soft-voiced, measured, unflashy. That is partly the point. He is the diaspora's quiet maximum.
